As jet fuel costs remain high due to the lack of a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, airlines from around the world are forced to make tough choices when it comes to where they fly and cut any routes that are not bringing in the necessary traffic.
Smaller cities and airports serving communities just far enough away from a larger airport are often the first to take the hit. This week, Spanish low-cost airline Vueling confirmed that it will permanently eliminate two flights to the Welsh capital of Cardiff.
Because Cardiff was the only city in the country that the Barcelona-based carrier served, cutting the flights means exiting Wales completely. One of the four countries making up the United Kingdom, Wales is home to a population of just over 3.18 million people.
Vueling permanently axing flights to Malaga and Alicante from Cardiff
The cut flights include routes to Cardiff from Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) and
Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport (ALC). Both launched to take local residents to destinations that many choose for their holidays, the flights will run for the last time on Oct. 22 and Oct. 24, respectively, according to Airline Geeks.
While the flights were always run based on seasonal demand, this time they will not return for the 2027 summer season.

In a statement on the cancellations, a Vueling representative said the carrier is “constantly analyzing our network and flight schedule to offer our passengers the best connectivity options and adapt our offer to the connectivity needs of each route,” as ITV reported.
It did not expand on just how unprofitable the Cardiff routes were; according to estimates from ITV, the two routes to Spain brought in thousands of passengers annually.

“In this regard, our route between Alicante and Cardiff will not operate during the 2026 winter season,” Vueling’s statement reads further, ITV noted. “In any case, we continuously evaluate any opportunities that may arise in the future.”
Cardiff is located approximately 150 miles, or a three-hour train ride, from London. Some closer, larger airports include Bristol Airport (BRS) and Birmingham Airport (BHX) across the border in England.
Vueling, part of the larger IAG group that also owns flag carriers British Airways and Iberia, first entered the Welsh market in 2012 and significantly increased connectivity for local residents looking to travel directly to Spain.

Cardiff Airport representatives expressed disappointment with Vueling’s decision, given that “Alicante remains a popular destination from Cardiff,” as ITV reported. They urged anyone with canceled routes to “contact the airline directly regarding their booking and to explore the alternative travel options available from Cardiff.”
The flights will be available for purchase until the end of October, and Vueling confirmed that it will reach out to those who booked travel beyond the phase-out dates with rebooking and refund options.
Airlines that will continue to fly to southern Spain from Cardiff into 2027 include TUI and Ryanair.
